Manufacturing
Keep plants running and supply chains moving.
ThreatGaurd helps manufacturers secure the IT systems that production depends on, and the boundary between office and plant networks, so a single infected laptop or supplier connection cannot stop the line.
Why it matters
In manufacturing, a cyber attack is a production problem.
When systems go down, lines stop, orders slip and customers wait. That is why manufacturers are a favourite target for ransomware: attackers know every hour of downtime adds pressure to pay.
Connected plants, remote vendor access and older systems that are hard to patch make the problem harder. The answer is not to stop connecting, but to control exactly how IT and plant networks meet.
-
Flat networks
When office and plant systems can reach each other freely, one infection can spread all the way to the line.
-
Remote access everywhere
Machine builders, integrators and suppliers often keep their own ways into plant networks.
-
Systems that cannot be patched
Older operating systems run critical equipment for years after vendor support ends.
IT/OT resilience
Clear lines between the office and the plant floor.
Most attacks on manufacturers start in IT and spread towards production. We secure the IT side, test the boundary hard and stay hands-off where safety matters most.
What we do at each layer of a typical plant
-
Levels 4 to 5
Enterprise IT
Fully tested
ERP, email, identity, cloud and supplier portals.
Penetration testing, cloud and identity reviews, and configuration hardening.
-
Level 3.5
IT/OT boundary
Boundary tested
Firewalls, jump hosts, remote access gateways and data transfer servers.
Rule reviews and segmentation testing to prove only approved paths exist.
-
Level 3
Site operations
Reviewed with your OT team
MES, historians, engineering workstations and site servers.
Accounts, remote access and server settings, reviewed in agreed windows.
-
Levels 1 to 2
Control systems
Not actively tested
PLCs, HMIs and supervisory control.
We never scan or test controllers. We confirm they can only be reached through approved paths.
-
Level 0
Physical process
Out of scope
Sensors, drives and actuators on the line.
Not touched in any engagement.
Layers follow the widely used Purdue reference model. Every plant is different, so we map your real architecture during scoping.
Find the right starting point
Start with the risk that worries you most.
Pick the situation closest to yours, or ask our team where to begin.
- Ransomware in the office network could spread and stop production. Recommended service: Endpoint & Infrastructure Security Assessment
- We are not sure our office and plant networks are really separated. Recommended service: Network & Firewall Security Assessment
- Machine builders and suppliers have remote access we cannot fully see. Recommended service: IAM Security
- Our ERP integrations and supplier portals have never been tested. Recommended service: Web & API Security Testing
- We do not know how quickly we could recover if key systems went down. Recommended service: Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery
- Customers ask for ISO 27001 or security evidence before awarding contracts. Recommended service: ISO 27001 & SOC 2 Readiness
Why ThreatGaurd
Security work that never puts production at risk.
-
Production comes first
Work near plant systems is planned with your operations and OT teams, in agreed windows.
-
Hands-off where it matters
No active scanning of controllers or safety systems, in any engagement.
-
Practical fixes for old systems
Where systems cannot be patched, we recommend segmentation, access controls and monitoring instead.
-
Findings everyone can act on
Plant-level summaries for leadership, and technical detail for IT, OT and vendor teams.
Safety rules for every engagement
- Change windows agreed with plant management
- A named OT contact available during work
- Immediate stop if anything behaves unexpectedly
- No changes to plant systems without approval
Rules are agreed in writing before any work starts on or near production networks.

FAQ
Questions manufacturing leaders ask us
Can’t find your answer? Our team is happy to help.
Do you test PLCs and control systems?
No. We do not run active scans or tests against controllers, HMIs or safety systems. We secure the IT systems around them and test the boundary, so controllers can only be reached through approved paths. If a deeper OT assessment is needed, we tell you so you can plan it with an OT specialist.
Will your work disrupt production?
Work near plant networks happens only in agreed windows, with a named OT contact available, and stops immediately if anything behaves unexpectedly. No change is made to plant systems without your approval.
How do you handle old systems that cannot be patched?
We reduce the risk around them instead: tighter network segmentation, restricted and monitored access, removal of unnecessary connections and secure configuration of the systems that talk to them. Any remaining risk is documented for leadership.
Can you help us prove security to customers and insurers?
Yes. Our reports and ISO 27001 readiness work give you credible evidence for customer security questionnaires, supplier audits and cyber insurance applications.
We have several plants. Where should we start?
Usually with the site that matters most to revenue or has the most remote access, then repeat the approach across sites. A network and firewall assessment across all sites is also a good way to find the riskiest connections first.
How do we get started?
Start with a short scoping call. We learn about your sites, networks, vendors and production schedule, then send a fixed-scope proposal with clear safety rules.
